The Disruptive Dependency Theory -- Part 4

My series on the Disruptive Dependency Theory continues. I've cut and pasted content from my Teaching Note on the Disruptive Dependency Theory into this blog post. As a result, there are some minor indentation and formatting errors. I request you, dear reader, to please ignore them.

The nations in the core use the following to exert their influence on the nations in the periphery: (a) political strategies; (b) economic strategies; (c) social and cultural strategies; (d) technological strategies. Disruptive innovation has emerged as one of the chief strategies. With the rise of disruptive innovation, they are able to "disrupt" existing business in a very large number of periphery nations, thereby a very small number of individuals are becoming super-rich while the rest of the world remains still quite poor.

The Disruptive Dependency Theory argues that the core nations use their economic power to create an unequal relationship with the periphery nations. The periphery nations are heavily dependent on the core nations for exports and imports, and this has created a cycle of dependency that is difficult to break. The core nations have the power to dictate the terms of trade, and this has meant that the periphery nations have been forced to export primary commodities at low prices while importing finished goods at high prices. This is the primary source of competitive advantage for nations, and this has been the case since the end of the Second World War when the United States and its allies emerged as the victors of the war at the end of hostilities.

In addition to economic power, the core nations also use their military might to exert control over the periphery nations. This has led to a situation where the periphery nations are often at the mercy of the core nations, and are unable to challenge them in any meaningful way. This has created a situation where the core nations are able to act with impunity, and the periphery nations are forced to accept their terms.

The Disruptive Dependency Theory also argues that the core nations use their cultural power to exert influence over the periphery nations. This has led to a situation where the periphery nations are often forced to adopt the cultural practices of the core nations, which can be detrimental to their own cultural traditions. This has also led to a situation where the periphery nations are often viewed as inferior to the core nations, which can lead to a lack of self-esteem and a sense of inferiority.

One of the main arguments of the Disruptive Dependency Theory is that the core nations are able to maintain their dominance through the use of technology. The core nations have been able to develop advanced technologies that the periphery nations are unable to access. This has created a situation where the periphery nations are dependent on the core nations for access to technology, which has further reinforced the cycle of dependency.
